MICHEALA MABINTY DePRINCE

Micheala Mabinty DePrince, a ballerina, who was the youngest member of Dance Theatre of Harlem has passed on. Though she was born Mabinty Bangura to a Muslim family in Sierra Leone, her adoptive parents changed her name to Micheala DePrince. Sadly, the young lady passed on at only twenty-nine years old, on September the tenth 2024.

The first time the world heard about Micheala Mabinty DePrince was in 2011 when she featured in a documentary titled, First Position.” Though she and fellow ballet dancers were the focus of the documentary, her story caught me everyone’s attention. A successful job ballerina from a war torn country? She got attention.

Thence, beautiful Micheala DePrince joined the Dance Theatre of Harlem, becoming their youngest ever dancer. And she was with them for seven years before moving on to a dance school in Philadelphia and finally the Netherlands in 2013 when she was eighteen years old.

Over and above all this, Micheala Mabinty DePrince was a Sierra-Leonean orphan who dared to dream. She dreamed of being a successful ballerina like several African girls and she actualized her dream. Micheala lost both parents to the war in Sierra-Leone, before she was four years old. Then was dumped in the orphanage by her uncle.

Thankfully, Mr and Mrs DePrince adopted her and gave her life an unforgettable and historical change. Unfortunately, we lost this precious gift who shared her precious life with us for only twenty-nine years.

We ask ladies for gentlemen that you celebrate this candle in the wind with a heart, applause or confetti in the comments section below.
